The Best of Intentions

The weather in America's High Five doesn't get much better than Wednesday's: high around 81 or so, slightest breeze, clear skies, no humidity. Perfection.

The morning was filled with other stuff... planned activities independent of incredible weather. I got the kids home right in the nick of time for a nap, and we are NOT in a place where we can "just skip" naps. TRUST me.

So anyhow, while the children slept, I thought of all the fun things we could do to enjoy the mild, temperate perfection outside the walls we've been stuck behind for too many months. In a former life I might have considered a drive down to Saugatuck to walk along the river and get a chai shake, though that was obviously before becoming acquainted with what life with small children ACTUALLY looks like. A walk to the park? Maybe out to the lake? These were possible. Why won't you wake up, little children? The sun is out! The hours of perfection are sneaking away!

They woke up, hungry.

(They are always, always hungry.)

Okay, I guess I'd better get these kids some food so they won't be grumpy tantrum-time-bombs wherever we decide to go.

And Judah's diaper is wet.

And Eden spilled her water.

And wants juice instead.

And Judah has decided that chicken and beans are not only unpreferable, but PERSONALLY OFFENSIVE. They are shoved off the tray as he, uh, expresses his discontent.

But we still have time! We can go out and hang out in the yard! Yeah! Hey, we've got sidewalk chalk! I can blow bubbles with the best of 'em! Judah can explore the grass! Eden can practice on the tricycle!

Great!

Blanket on the lawn, little baby lawn chair, giant bubble bucket, sidewalk chalk, random toys for Judah, tricycle dug out of garage.

But Judah doesn't want to stay on the blanket.

Okay, not a big deal. Of
course he can crawl around and explore. Isn't he the best judge of what is a suitable crawling surface for those newly exposed little soft knees that have been hiding away in pants all winter long?

And yes, certainly he will check out that little bug. This is no cause for concern, mama bear.

Wait, is that bird poop?

Okay, Judah's back on the blanket, distracted for the moment with a giant bucket of bubbles while Eden "rides" her bike around the driveway. I am thankful at this moment that we live on a quiet cul-de-sac as I realize how impossible it is to keep a close eye on Eden while Judah is doing WHAT?! Oh... okay. It's just a bubble wand. It's just soap, right? He's not the first kid to stick a bubble wand in his mouth.

Why is he making that gagging face?

Oh. Yeah. That's sidewalk chalk.

...annnnddd... we're done.

Poor Eden. She was having fun with her tricycle before we had to head BACK inside with Mr. Destructor. Maybe we'll try to enjoy the weather again tomorrow...

Note: this image was taken while on a splendid nature walk with Erika and Ana, whose pictures I will be sharing soon... watch for it!

Ah, the best laid plans...somehow, it never works out quite the way we envision it will. Still, you have succeeded in memory-making endeavors like few of us ever do, niece-o-mine. Your blogging & photo-journaling will one day make that perfectly clear to you & your children.
