It was a clear, warm summer night that I pulled up to my sister's home after receiving the call I'd been waiting weeks to answer. Crickets and fireflies greeted me, and the house itself seemed ready to welcome a new family member.
Megan, too, was ready.
The lucky labor socks (whose list of beneficiaries is double the length shown here) were worn, but it wasn't long after I arrived that they were stripped in favor of bare feet to enter the pool.
She makes it look so easy. Truly, this woman was made to birth babies.
Megan's incredible midwife asked Avery if he'd like to catch his baby, likely his last opportunity to do so. Megan encouraged him, and Avery got his game face on. He rubbed his palms together determinedly: "Time to dial in, baby."

Here he is!
It's a boy! Silas James Hanneken, born at home just before midnight on June 25th, 2011.
(I think YaYa was relieved she didn't have to do the catching this time.)
The boy has an appetite. And a mighty set of lungs.

While his sisters sleep upstairs, Silas cozies up to momma and daddy.
We love you, Silas James. You were not early or late; you came at precisely the time you intended to.
