In the hopes of raising awareness as well as some additional monies to help those who need it, our church fellowship has challenged the congregation to a five-day "Hunger Challenge." This does a better job explaining it than I can:
So yes, I was touched and intrigued and READY for this! I made my list and I stocked up on rice and beans and I made a big giant batch of rice with garlic and cumin, onions, potatoes and peas, and it didn't even feel like a concession!
Then we got to day two.
I wanted a snack.
And I didn't *feel* like more rice and beans.
And the tray of No-Bake cookies in the fridge were taunting me.
But I used it as impetus to pray, and was even more struck by (a fraction of) the reality of what so many live with on a daily basis. Try it. Try it for a day. I like rice and beans and tortillas, and I like oatmeal. I was surprised at how quickly my eating habits (and how very American they are) became apparent.
Really! Try it.
I have to admit that, at the end of two days, hunger and a realization of the nutrients I was unable to give, um, the baby I'm growing, Derek and I decided to cut out fast food for a couple of weeks and put that toward hunger relief. The awareness was raised, and, tellingly, the fast food fasting will probably put more substantial funds toward those who need it.

I love it! I am going to try it! but I dont think anyone will blame since, well, you ARE growing a baby inside you and all. Yay for awareness of social injustices:)
I can totally relate to this. We did this last year through our church, and I can still remember vividly the acute hunger pains. (I, too, was with child! Not fun!) I must say though, it was worth every rice and bean in the end, as I felt more connected than ever with our brothers and sisters living in poverty all over the world. I'm actually looking forward to doing it again this year. Way to go!!!
LOVE the fine print! :)
You are stronger than I, I don't like any of those foods (except tortillas) so I would be very hungry for an entire week. I don't blame you either, the babe needs nutrients, and since you ARE able to provide those, you should.
