I grew up on the north side of Holland, home of the original Captain Sundae. In high school, a slew of friends and acquaintances worked behind the counter, where they gave me free treats and told me what a mistake it was to wear open-toed shoes while slinging ice cream to Tommy Turtle-crazed locals. Let there be no mistake: there is a reason these people were crazed. The Tommy is the best sundae on the planet, hands down. (And I never ever exaggerate, even a little.) Add the gloriosity that is the Tommy Turtle to the quaint setting in the trees amongst nautical themed kitsch and a big concrete turtle upon which to enjoy your frozen treat, and ahhh, you've got The Cap'n.
You can imagine how, upon my big move to the south side of town, I was reluctant to embrace a new Captain Sundae, recently purchased from its original founders and now turned into a local chain.
Certainly this old Dairy Queen does NOT hold a candle to the Cap'n of my childhood and adolescence! Well, I will drive to the north side if I have to. This is not Captain Sundae.
But they have a drive thru.
And it's in walking distance from my new house.
I'm such a pushover when it comes to ice cream.
**Postscript: No, there are no photos of a Tommy Turtle in this post. To obtain such images, I would have had to stop eating it.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am that Dad and I made plans YESTERDAY to meet the Boeve's at Cap'n Sundae tonight. That will be at the new-est Cap'n in Zeeland ( the former "Dairy Y"). We can attest to no decrease in carmel, chocolate, pecan decadence in this eastern satelite of the original Cap'n.
Only 4 hours and 38 minutes to wait.
Dang, and here I am, stuck at Sandy Pines with only the Dairy Dip to satisfy my craving for a TT (no such confection exists on their menu, I can assure you!) Well, at least here I have made a pact that no ice cream shall pass my lips unless I've walked or peddled there to get it! (3 miles,r.t.)
that is seriously the most expressive kid! who taught him these looks? i love how you capture beautiful essences, each very different, of your two kids.
