After being free from antibiotics for less than a week, I had to make the call to cancel this morning's plans due to Judah's warm forehead and Selah's continuous coughing. I stamped around, I spat and blamed, and then, once I was resigned to my fate as that of every other mother of small children, I made a list. It was not overly-ambitious, just a short sheet of tasks it'd be nice to cross off at some point before Derek got home.
And the day... the day was grand.
I can't explain it, but for a relaxed pace to accommodate illness and a lax expectation for achievement. What WAS achieved was a peaceful, productive, comfortable, growing day at home. I began this post to distract me from the annoyance (there, I said it) of having sick kids AGAIN, but the day was not bearable, it was lovely. We watched Charlotte's Web, we read library books, we took baths and put on fresh clean jammies. We ate lunch and dinner and snacks in between, and the dishes and laundry continued. This may sound simple, basic, even menial to someone outside the tunnel-world of the home with very small children, but creating and maintaining a rhythm that sustains rest, health, cleanliness, AND developing brains is no small feat. But best of all...
Eden read me a story.
Eden.
Is reading.

And so, it seems appropriate that I should continue on with the post I was originally prepared to publish to catch up on photos, specifically, Eden's birthday. My Eden Johanna is five years old.
In honor of our ever-feminine decorator, we draped the staircase with pink steamers and pink balloons, leading to a sickeningly cliche Disney Princess castle gift bag. (What can I say... it wasn't my birthday.) Even Judah could not resist the glittery spectacle.

"Mommy! The castle doors open! And there are PRINCESSES inside!"
Pinkalicious is new to Eden, but quickly becoming a favorite. (Shocker.)
Even with continuous shooting, I got ONE frame of this moment before she extinguished every candle in one swift, expert puff. I am a manual ninja.
The day before Eden's birthday, she had her special treat day at preschool. I cherish having photos of the sweet Eden who looks so tall and old to me today, but who will seem so young and small when I look back on her in her sweet nursery school.
Show and Tell
There were two birthdays celebrated this particular day, and although Eden and I had made and decorated pink and purple kitty cat cookies for her treat, she couldn't resist the uber-sweet, uber-pink cupcakes. I can't blame her.
Such an Eden face.
The queen of her domain
Happy, happy birthday, my sweet girl. I love you a million billion, and I'm going to keep you!

The look on her face with the Princess Bag makes all it's pink glittered horror worthwhile. :) Can't believe baby Eden is FIVE!
Tears again. Pinkalicious is still a favorite with my "big" girls.
Reading...I couldn't believe it when she READ me the Princess Ballerina book this afternoon.
It's such an accomplishment! I am proud of her and so wistful all at the same time.
