Derek and I came across this photo on my old (but in-the-process-of-repair) computer yesterday.

It was snapped just before I dropped her baby brother off with his Oma, and took Eden with me, for the first time, to Bible Study Fellowship. It was September, and Eden was two and a half years old. We still lived on 27th Street, we still had the cat, and she'd spent the previous few months transitioning to a big girl bed.
Eden has lived half a lifetime since then. Next week, my baby turns FIVE.
THIS photo was taken on Eden's favorite day of the week, the day she gets to go to BSF in the morning and Cherry Lane in the afternoon. What can I say? The kid loves structure. She also has an affinity for color, patterns, "set-ups" that are often gifted to mommy in the morning or after rest time...
...gifts, anything fancy and pink, and countdowns. It was insisted we make a birthday countdown calendar just after new year. Judging by the manner of crossing-off alone, it seems the girl has gotten progressively more excited as the big day draws near.

All three of our babies have their birthdays within a span of just over six weeks, so there tends to be a whole lot of nostalgia in these parts in the spring. A first child's birthday, though, calls for reflection upon not only her life, but the anniversary of OUR life changing so profoundly around her birth. In many ways, our family was born with Eden Johanna.
And though we reflect, we never look back.

Oh just think about those pioneers who left their families on the east coast perhaps never to see them again. How blessed I am to have these little ones not only living so close ( close enough to tickle and pinch and giggle with) but also to get these wonderful pictures to brighten my day. Wouldn't those grandmas loading their little chicks into a Conestoga wagon and waving good bye, maybe forever, have loved Skype and blogging and email?
