Mama Mia

This entry may be an exercise in just how many overused colloquialisms I can use in one place at one time. Let's get a few out of the way:

I've got all these plates spinning...

I'm juggling lots of things right now...

A mother's work is never done...

Every day is just putting out fires, one after another.

I don't know where to begin. Shall I list my tasks and deadlines this week? Give a run down of the kids' developmental achievements and challenges? Open a new tab and search for a pumpkin recipe to use up the pureed squash in my fridge? (Because, you know, what's a successful week without pumpkin bread, for pity's sake...)

Though it illustrates here how I'm feeling on this busy and blustery cold wet day, the above photo is actually a representation of Eden's most recently-developed coping mechanism when she doesn't get her way. Is it wrong of me to encourage the moping-while-in-tornado-drill-position? It is so much quieter and more peaceful than the teary crying fits it evolved from...

Though I've only just begun what could be many tedious paragraphs outlining my mental state while keeping these plates spinning, Eden is now awake and Judah will certainly follow suit momentarily, thus beginning the whilrwind (not unlike the autumnal weather outside) of dressing and feeding little children, finishing the grocery list and making it to Meijer before Judah's morning nap (without which he crumples into an inconsolable mess,) completing a commissioned pen and ink drawing for shipment to Virginia tomorrow, preparing packages of prints and photo CDs to be mailed to clients, trying not to forget about the ultrasound I have tomorrow where we will NOT be learning the gender of the baby for the first time in three pregnancies, making a batch of laminated nametags for the women in my Bible study discussion group, and maybe, if I'm lucky and the stars are aligned just so (only, you know, I don't really believe that stuff)...

...I'll get a shower.

"Autumn is a season of great beauty, but it is also a season of decline; the days grow shorter, the light is suffused, and summer's abundance decays toward winter's death. Faced with this inevitable winter, what does nature do in autumn? It scatters the seeds that will bring new growth in the spring - and scatter them with amazing abandon." Parker J. Palmer from his book, "Let Your Life Speak"

Awesome post. CJ- I'm glad that quote had a happy ending; it's kind of 'debby downer' in the middle there. Wuah wuah.
